Fun, quirky - what's not to love about Gluggles
As a child of the seventies I can remember getting my pocket money (10p) on a Saturday morning and racing round town to spend it as quickly as I got it.
There was a lovely shop in Finkle Street in Richmond where my mother certainly didn’t want me to go anywhere near. It was called Cornucopia and it was full of china. It was literally a china shop with every smart brand stocked. Ainsley, Wedgewood, Spode, Beswick and I’m sure many more. It was run by a man called David and he had, in my memory a lot of ladies working for him behind the counters. Like a bee to honey, I was drawn to this beautiful shop full of trinkets and imagine my surprise to find something I could afford with my 10p pocket money.
Wade whimsies, tiny little characters with a box, were in displayed in abundance in Cornucopia and I couldn’t wait for Saturday to come round to add to my collection of cats, dogs, zebras, giraffes all lovingly displayed and cared for in my bedroom and I wasn’t alone in my obsession for these little creatures.
Fast forward 40 years, my Wade whimsies long forgotten and lost to charity shops, imagine my pleasure in getting reacquainted with the Wade brand in the form of these fabulous Gluggle jugs. Made in the heart of Staffordshire with the best of British workmanship, a beautiful display of all the right colours to suit me and the shop down to the ground. The memories of Cornucopia came flooding back. Iconic Gluggle jugs so called because when liquid is poured to three quarters full it makes a glug glug sound. Sold as a jug but also make a wonderful and contemporary vase.
I am delighted to stock these irresistible Gluggle jugs and to bring Wade Ceramics back to Richmond. A perfect centrepiece for any occasion, fund, quirky and vintage – a real piece of British history – what’s not to love?
